Magnolia Dell

It's a little park somewhere in Brooklyn, Pretoria. It is small and so very busy. There is a community vibe bustling in this little park that makes anyone and everyone want to join in with any form of dancing happening. I recently had a capoeira workshop in this park. The children loved it (and afterwards, the parents thanked us for providing so much entertainment for the children). Capoeira is a Brazilian martial arts, that includes maculele (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5hCWpyyISxc&feature=related) and samba de roda (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qFD6oyeYqag). The children joined us for our capoeira roda as well as the maculele.

That is dancing in public spaces for you.

  1. Don't have a lot of time to write much, but I wanted to say how neat it is that yours is a community where people JOIN IN on public dancing. Just last night, me and a few of my friends started dancing in a parking lot. We had plenty of fun, but nobody else got into it. :(

  2. Pity people are 'too scared' to dance in public, unless they are drunk. You know, when I was in Malawi, the group whom I worked with on the farm, and I went to a Full Moon party or something such... And there was music playing and one of the musicians just started dancing madly. He saw myself and one other gal wanting to dance with him but a bit hesitant. He turned to us and said, "sometimes you just can't worry about what other people thing, you just have to dance".
